Call for Experts to Support Emerging African Researchers

Researcher at work

AREF has a wonderful opportunity for mid/senior-level scientists (approx. 5-10 years experience) to support its Fellowship and Academy programmes as peer-reviewers and mentors. We are recruiting additional experts to join our College of Experts (CoE) to help review our Research Development Fellowship proposals and other applications.

AREF is a registered charity that supports emerging global health researchers in Africa who are on the pathway to research independence. We provide Fellowships and Academy programmes that give talented researchers opportunities to develop key enabling skills – such as those essential to winning funds, developing and sustaining collaborations, personal effectiveness, managing teams and producing research with impact. Fellowships includes support for a scientist or research clinicians to develop technical skills through a funded placement at a centre-of-excellence in Africa or Europe.

Our vision is of a growing cohort of African researchers working in Africa, who lead and partner world-class research that benefits patients, populations, policy makers and practitioners of the region.

We are looking for expert reviewers, mentors and inspiring facilitators who share the AREF vision to join the College of Experts.

Roles

  • As a member of our College of Experts, we might ask you to review applications for our AREF Research Development Fellowships and workshop programmes.
  • We are also recruiting members of the College of Experts who would like to have the opportunity to be a career mentor for one of our new fellows or be a member of our informal faculty of facilitators, who can provide expert input and contributions to our workshops.

Commitment

Typically, a College of Expert reviewer might be asked to contribute a couple of days to reviewing approximately four applications – including participating in a formal online panel meeting.

Being a mentor means being reasonably available at intervals agreed with your mentee. We would also ask you to contribute sharing good practice and assessing the programme.
