To ensure that AREF funds high quality research that stands the best chance of making an impact, applications for AREF’s competitive awards are assessed using a robust peer-review system.

All proposals submitted to us are scrutinised by independent scientific experts who consider the viability, quality, cost-effectiveness and impact of the science concerned.

In 2015 we established a College of Experts for peer‐review. The panel is mainly emerging researchers with 5 to 10 years postdoctoral research experience, drawn where possible from Africa. There are currently 47 members of the College, of whom:

  • 33 (70%) are African, and based either in Africa or overseas.
  • 14 (30%) of members are women.

Our aim is to achieve a well-balanced and diverse College, with an equal number of men and women, representation from all geographical subregions of Africa and Anglo/Franco/Lusophone countries, and inclusive of all disciplines able to contribute to advancing health through research.

We are very grateful for the contributions our College of Experts make and recruit periodically for members. If you are a researcher and interested in finding out more about joining our College of Experts, you can find more details here.

An Awards Assessment Panel oversees the integrity of the awards process, and advises the AREF Strategy Board on awards on the basis of the assessments by referees drawn from the AREF College of Experts.
