Five years ago, the Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) embarked on a dream to transform the leadership potential of Africa’s health researchers. That dream is now within reach.

We have trained, mentored and given access to global networks to over 210 talented young researchers from 30 different African countries. In turn, these researchers have turned their ideas into fundable projects that tackle Africa’s most pressing health issues.

Having successfully established AREF as a leading supporter of Africa’s health researchers, we are now embarking on a new phase of programme enhancement, development and delivery – and we need a new Chief Executive to work alongside our new Board of Trustees to lead us through this exciting new chapter.

Reporting to the Chair of the Board, you will bring strong leadership to the day-to-day running of the charity. You will have oversight of a small but rapidly expanding team, and you will also act as the charity’s spokesperson.

You will have a strong track record at a senior level in an organisation, preferably not-for-profit, with senior experience of health research funding or research capacity development. You will have exceptional networking skills, experience of service delivery and experience of raising funds. You will be able to communicate clearly and confidently at the highest level, able to inspire others of the importance of creating opportunities for Africans to undertake health research in Africa. Ideally, you will also have had direct experience of funding research, developing research capacity or researcher development in Africa.

You can find full details by downloading our recruitment pack or by contacting Heather Taylor at Forest HR on [email protected].

To apply please submit your current CV and supporting statement and completed Equal Opportunity Form.
